Abstract
Nocardiosis is an important opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed patients, but less recognized in Korea than in other countries.
We report here two cases of pulmonary nocardiosis in immunosuppressed patients, in whom the diagnosis was made by he demonstration in sputum smears of branching filamentous Gram positive organisms that were acid fast when stained with the
modified
Ziehl-neelson method. Culture grew Nocardia asteroides. One of two cases also developed pulmonary tuerculosis one month later during the antibiotic therapy.
We conclude that, in immunosuppressed patients with respiratory symptoms, the chracteristic findings from repeated sputum Gram stains andmodified acid fast stains should be sufficient for a presumptive diagnosis of pulmonary nocardiosis and an
antibiotic therapy should be at rted immediately.
